In the February 11, 2025, election in Okmulgee City, incumbent Councilman at Large, Mickey Baldwin was re-elected with 77% of the vote, totaling 229 votes, while challenger Eddie Nelson received 23%, with 70 votes.
While these elections determined key leadership roles in Okmulgee County, voter turnout was alarmingly low—possibly less than 5% of registered voters cast a ballot. This means that a small fraction of the community made decisions that affect everyone.
This is a trend that must change. Every election, including special elections, plays a crucial role in shaping the future of our community. Local officials make decisions on infrastructure, economic development, education, and public safety—issues that impact our daily lives. When only a few people vote, a handful of voices determine the future of the entire region.
Another critical election is coming up on March 4, 2025, (March 4th is the Republican Primary for Oklahoma Senate District 8.) This is an opportunity for residents to make their voices heard and shape the leadership that will represent their community at the state level.
🚨 Why does this matter?
🗳️ The Henryettan strongly encourages all eligible voters to participate in this upcoming election. Mark your calendars, spread the word, and make a plan to vote.
🔹 Check your voter registration
🔹 Find your polling place
🔹 Encourage your friends and neighbors to vote
Apathy is not an option. Low voter turnout means fewer voices are heard, fewer opinions are represented, and fewer community needs are met. If we want to see change, we must show up and vote.
Let’s prove that Okmulgee County cares about its future. Your vote is your voice—use it!
In no way does Okmulgee Local News and The Henryettan suggest that the right person did not win this election. However, when the majority of eligible voters choose not to participate, the future of a community is decided by only a small fraction of the electorate. Elections—no matter how big or small—shape the direction of our local government, policies, and community well-being. Every vote is a voice, and when people don’t show up at the polls, they allow a select few to make decisions that impact everyone. Let’s change the narrative and ensure that our community’s future is decided by the many, not just the few.
