Oklahoma Sooners Capture 2026 Men’s College World Series Championship in Omaha
OU Claims First National Title Since 1994 with Dominant Win Over North Carolina
OMAHA, Neb. — The Oklahoma Sooners are national champions once again.
Oklahoma defeated North Carolina 13-2 on Monday night in Game 3 of the 2026 Men’s College World Series Championship Series at Charles Schwab Field in Omaha, securing the program’s third NCAA Division I Baseball National Championship and its first since 1994.
The victory capped one of the most remarkable postseason runs in recent college baseball history. After entering the NCAA Tournament as an unseeded team and finishing the regular season having lost its final four conference series, the Sooners caught fire at the perfect time and battled their way through one of the toughest tournament paths in the nation.
Oklahoma opened the championship series with a 9-3 victory over North Carolina before the Tar Heels responded with a 6-2 win in Game 2 to force a decisive winner-take-all showdown Monday night.
When everything was on the line, the Sooners delivered their best performance of the season.
Sooners Take Control Early
Oklahoma wasted little time putting pressure on North Carolina’s pitching staff. The Sooners scored two runs in the second inning and continued to add to their lead throughout the evening, scoring in five consecutive innings and building a commanding advantage that North Carolina could never overcome.
By the middle innings, Oklahoma had established firm control of the game behind a balanced offensive attack and strong pitching performance.
The Sooners finished with 13 runs on 14 hits while holding the Tar Heels to just two runs despite North Carolina collecting 10 hits. Oklahoma’s bullpen and defense repeatedly escaped scoring threats and prevented the Tar Heels from generating momentum.
Branch and Willits Lead Championship Effort
Several Sooners delivered standout performances on the national stage.
Kyle Branch had a career night, going 3-for-4 with six RBIs, including a three-run home run that helped put the championship game out of reach. Jaxon Willits also shined, finishing 3-for-4 while reaching base five times and driving in two runs.
Willits was named the Most Outstanding Player of the 2026 Men’s College World Series after batting .500 during the tournament and setting a school record with 13 hits during the CWS.
On the mound, LJ Mercurius provided a crucial relief performance, throwing 5.2 innings while allowing only one earned run and striking out five to earn the victory.
Historic Championship Run
Oklahoma’s road to the national championship was anything but easy.
The Sooners knocked off some of the nation’s top teams throughout the NCAA Tournament, defeating multiple highly-seeded opponents on their way to Omaha and eventually winning the title over No. 5 national seed North Carolina. The championship run included victories over several nationally ranked programs and demonstrated the resilience of a team that peaked when it mattered most.
The title marks Oklahoma’s third national championship in baseball, joining championship teams from 1951 and 1994. It also adds another historic chapter to the Sooners’ athletic tradition and gives head coach Skip Johnson his first national championship as Oklahoma’s head coach.
Oklahoma Celebrates in Omaha
As the final out was recorded, Oklahoma players poured onto the field to celebrate a championship that few outside the program saw coming just weeks earlier. The Sooners completed a remarkable postseason turnaround and left Omaha as the last team standing in college baseball.
For Oklahoma fans, June 22, 2026, will be remembered as the night the Sooners returned to the top of college baseball and brought another national championship trophy back to Norman.
The 2026 Oklahoma Sooners finished their unforgettable season as NCAA Division I Baseball National Champions.
