Banning Requests Interim Study to Advance Oklahoma’s Innovation Economy and Workforce Development
OKMULGEE — Rep. Chris Banning of House District 24 has filed an interim study request to examine Oklahoma’s economic development policies, innovation economy, and workforce readiness. While the City of Okmulgee falls primarily in another district, portions of Okmulgee County are represented in District 24, making this study relevant for the broader region.
The proposed study will help identify what’s working and where barriers remain for businesses and families across eastern Oklahoma, including communities in and around Okmulgee County.
“Chairman Hill has done important work on this issue for several years and I appreciate the foundation he has laid,” Banning said. “As we continue looking at economic development policy, we need to be certain the laws we pass and the tools we put in place are actually benefiting Oklahoma families.”
Rep. Brian Hill (R-Mustang) previously led the effort, hosting his eighth annual interim study on Oklahoma’s innovation economy and workforce last fall. That session convened state leaders, industry experts, agency officials, and innovators to identify challenges facing Oklahoma businesses and explore ways to bolster the state’s economic competitiveness.
Banning emphasized the importance of a data-driven approach moving forward. “The next step is to build on that work by taking a closer look at what is working and where the barriers remain,” he noted.
Hill expressed strong support for continuing the initiative. “Oklahoma’s future will not be built by accident — it will be built through intentional leadership, innovation, and a commitment to creating opportunities in every community,” Hill said. “I greatly appreciate Rep. Banning’s willingness to continue this important work and build upon the foundation established through these annual interim studies. By bringing together leaders from numerous industries, we can better identify barriers, strengthen our workforce, and find solutions to ensure Oklahoma remains a place where businesses grow, and people thrive.”
If approved, the study would take place later this year.
